Remembering a time when Dems and Repubs got along
During these troubled times, I often have worried about my beloved country.
Will we be able to come together as Americans or will we continue to divide ourselves into warring factions?
I’ve just finished reading a Greenwald piece about how Republicans openly debate party issues while Democrats nowadays seem to follow party dictates rather than debate about such issues.
Two years ago I had bookmarked this story from pieces spread across several sources. It is a bad habit that former newspaper reporters cling to, this habit of saving history.
I had watched a video of a little known legislator in Tennessee who eloquently spoke from his heart about what we all must do. His name is Rep. John DeBerry.
If we listen to his words and his passion, we all might understand how close we are as a society to jumping off a cliff like lemmings.
The Tennessee Democrat Party’s State Executive Committee had removed Rep. DeBerry from the Democrat primary ballot after 26 years in office.
He stood for election as an independent, after the Tennessee legislature amended the voting law in order to allow him to run for office in the general election.
DeBerry was kicked out of the Tennessee Democrat party because his votes on abortion issues and school choice were not the approved position of the Democrat party.
Eventually he lost his bid to remain in the legislature.
However shortly near the end of 2020, Governor Bill Lee appointed him to become his senior cabinet advisor.
Guess the good guys do win a few.
